Sustainable tourism in the digital age: challenges and opportunities for the modernization of heritage tourism sites

In the framework of the Austrian-Hungarian project “InnoGuide4CHT – Cross-border cooperation to develop a joint innovative leading solution for the expansion of visitor offers in open-air cultural heritage tourism facilities”, the project partners strive to strengthen cultural heritage tourism in the programme region, improve the digital offer for conveying cultural heritage and to establish interdisciplinary cooperation.

To support the development of specialised trainings for employees in the sector, developing and implementing a digital visitor guidance system solution using innovative technologies, and to create target-group-specific knowledge transfer for families, individual visitors and people with disabilities, extensive research was conducted in the time from May 2024-February 2025.

Combining the results of different surveys and thematic analysis, the research report provides an overview of the findings, while the presented analyses provide a more detailed dive into the findings, various aspects of modern visitor guidance and conveying of knowledge in the context of cultural heritage tourism sites. This project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund within the framework of the Interreg VI-A Austria-Hungary programme and co-financed by the Republic of Hungary, the Province of Burgenland and the project partners’ own resources.
